Your marble tile has specific maintenance requirements to help retain its beauty over the long-term. Without your commitment to maintenance, you might find the stone can scratch, or become dull, its polished or honed finish disappearing, which can limit your return on investment. In this latest post, our Fontile Kitchen & Bath team has some recommendations for you to clean and restore your marble floor using some simple tips for maintaining marble tile in your Vancouver home.
Seal the Floor
It is highly recommended to seal any natural stone, particularly marble tile. There are several different types of sealers available on the marketplace worth investigating : Natural Sealers vs. Enhancing Sealers. (If the stone hasn’t already been factory sealed) It’s recommended to reseal once every 1 to 2 years, depending on use. The Sealing process is quite easy. Clean the tile (see notes on cleaners below) and once dry, apply the sealer. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. Then buff it off with a lint free cloth. That’s all there is to it!
Remember:Only pH Neutral Balanced Cleaners Should be Used
One of the most important tips to remember when cleaning marble floors is to ensure that you only use neutral, pH balanced cleaners. These products are designed to clean the stone without damaging it. The cleaners will not ensure that any etching or scratching can occur.. So, be sure to keep anything acidic off the tile or clean immediately if there is an accident. Some common spills to attend to immediately are vinegar, citric acids such as lemon or lime juice, red wine.
Wipe Floors After Shower
Marble tile is often used in for bathroom spaces where it can help to provide the ideal aesthetic balance in the design. But its location means it often becomes wet after family members use the shower or nearby sink. To prevent water damage to your marble tile, make sure you wipe the tile down with a clean towel after using the space, even if your stone has been sealed
Vacuum Regularly
Another important element in maintaining your marble tile floor is minimizing the amount of dust and other contaminants within the space. Dirt and dust can be moved around the floor, potentially scratching the marble material and creating unsightly pits + scuff marks that can only be removed by being professionally re-polished which can be fairly expensive. If you can vacuum the contaminants before they are moved, you can ensure they don’t impact the floor.
