These elements play a decisive role in your décor style, and you can use them to broaden or add depth to your space

When you’re renovating, designing or giving a room a new look, the potential floor and wall combinations are endless. To achieve your desired interior design style the effect, texture, pattern and material itself are all key factors.

The best colour combinations for floors and walls

Opting for a lighter base tone (whether on both floors and walls or just floor tiles) makes for a more spacious, brighter room scheme. It puts the spotlight on your furnishings and other decorative elements (Persian White marble and Retro Blanco ceramic tiles by L’Antic Colonial).

Using the same design or color on the walls and floors results in a striking sense of continuity (of materials, designs and colors). If you go for this option it’s a good idea to get the color of the grout between the ceramic tiles right (Butech). This will make the space look more uniform.

You could also add geometric ceramic floor tiles in colder tones (a hydraulic tile look). These match well with lighter wall tiles, creating a beautiful color combination between the floor and walls. One such example is Triana floor and wall tiles combined with Vetri Blu and Marmi China ceramic tiles, all by Porcelanosa. If you want to add some personality to a room, you can introduce different materials to zone the space.

Another option is to match neutral floor tiles with walls in darker tones. Playing with contrasts, you could combine wood-inspired wall tiles (XTONE® Ewood Honey) with XTONE® Calacatta Gold floor tiles, or Airslate Metal wall tiles with Parque Genova 1L Light floor tiles by L’Antic Colonial.

Florals and exotic or geometric patterns are another fantastic alternative. If you opt for darker floor tiles you could complement them with colored designs in lighter shades, or something more plain and simple (such as Skins Murals Abstract Blue wallpaper with a vinyl finish by L’Antic Colonial). If you decide on lighter flooring, you can afford a more lavish design on the walls (Alluslate® Capricce Nocce panels by KRION®).

How to coordinate your floors and walls

When you’re deciding which materials to use for your floors and walls, think about the following points:

– Natural light. This has a direct bearing on the look of your space. The way the light falls will affect the colors of your walls and floor tiles, and will add warmth to the overall look.
– The size of your space. As well as the overall size of the room you should think about ceiling height. This will help you find the perfect color combination for your floors, walls and doors.
– Function. How will you use the room? Think about it, and select the right material for the function.
– Décor. Have you already got your furnishings and accessories? Use them as a basis when deciding on the color scheme for your floor and walls.

Neutral and natural tones are the best choice for flooring. Darker hues will give you a serene and sophisticated interior design scheme – and highlight the walls and decorative elements – but will also make the space feel smaller. Lighter floors, meanwhile, will give you a more welcoming look and provide a contrast with the rest of the room.
